Despite growing calls to democratize philanthropy and elevate “community-based fundraising,” many nonprofits still focus on white supporters and overlook donors of color who would give more if asked. Research shows that white people make up roughly three quarters of American donors but only 60 percent of the country’s population.
Charities are missing out on a chance to attract more donors, but they are leaving dollars on the table, too: About 14 percent of millionaires are people of color, and that share will likely keep growing as the nation’s demographics continue to change.
